``The builder played an integral part in the environmentally-sensitive design of this home. The use of appropriate building fabric, effective window design and north-facing building orientation has produced a two-level house with low energy consumption in both summer and winter. A reverse brick veneer solution was adopted fore a specialist wine storage area and room fans and air transfer systems efficiently disperse both warm and cool air throughout. Recycled materials were used in the construction and particular attention was paid to the collection and consumption of water and re-use by installing large on-site tanks and ensuring a grey water system was in place’’.

``Balance Homes has produced a well-detailed and thoughtfully constructed energy efficient home that incorporates a variety of diverse materials and finishes. The house includes strategically-positioned windows that allow winter sun to enter thermal mass walls and floors. In-floor hydronic heating…..double-glazed thermally-efficient windows have all been used. The builder was also involved in design and detailing solutions including the fail-safe rainwater heads and the complex external water control and passive heating systems that operate throughout the home. Overall, this home exemplifies a holistic approach to energy efficiency and a high standard of detail and finish.

"This project (Crafers, Adelaide Hills) demonstrates an outstanding example of sustainable housing. Careful attention to sighting has enabled optimum use of orientation and minimised any disturbance to the property resulting in the rehabilitation of the natural spring and vegetation. A good use of reverse brick veneer construction coupled with good cross flow ventilation and ceiling fans makes this a very comfortable house in which to live. Careful use of recycled and plantation timbers as well as solar water heating minimise impacts on natural resources."
